It’s an exciting time for my constituency.  In the last month I’ve been to three major launches, the launch of Hitachi, the opening of a new leisure and activity centre ROF59, and the launch of East Durham Trust’s job clubs. Each of these openings and launches means good news for local people.

Dogs Trust

They say a dog is a man’s best friend. Animals and pets definitely mean a huge amount to me and to British people.  We have had a number of political issues that over the last few weeks my office has been dealing with including the fox hunting bill and petitions around Cecil the Lion. Animal cruelty and maltreatment is atrocious and should never be tolerated. Many animals in the UK are neglected and abused. Charities like Dogs Trust are vital in ensuring that some of those these animals are protected. Often an animal is at risk when they are in the hands of the wrong owner or when an owner realises they can no longer look after them. Last week I went to visit Dogs Trust to see their vital work in action. I met some of the dogs in their care, I also heard from staff at the centre on front-line issues including the importance of micro-chipping and neutering dogs, as well as the education work carried out by the charity in communities across the region. It was a very informative and rewarding visit.

Fishburn Primary School Summer Fair

There are lots of fairs on at this time of year and although I can’t get to all of them, it’s been nice to get along to a few of them over the last few weeks. I was particularly delighted to visit Fishburn Primary school’s summer fair. I first met the catering team who encourage children make healthy food choices. I watched some of the younger pupils perform a ballet routine. I also got a chance to speak to the head and some of the team at school. I was really impressed with the community spirit the school was fostering.Fishburn_school_fair_sml.jpg

It’s important that my constituents are kept up to date with what I am getting up to in the constituency so every two weeks I will be posting a round up of some of the highlights.

This week I spent some time in Aycliffe visiting community groups, raising awareness of food poverty and meeting with members of the public
